Oarsome Lea rowers raise £5,000+ for GCP!

On 6th and 7th September, the team spirit was palpable as 20 members of the Lea Rowing Club took to the River Great Ouse, rowing up to 80 kilometres to raise money for Globe Community Project.

For those of us cheering from the riverbank on Day 2, it was heartwarming to see how willingly the crews picked up their oars for this massive challenge, despite terrible blisters and cracked hands from Day 1. There was plenty of banter as the coxed 4, two quad sculls and double scull slid onto the water, and people’s sense of humour remained intact, even as muscles seized up by the end of the row.

Given the blazing sunshine and distances involved, pit-stops were essential, carefully planned in by GCP trustee and event organiser Julian Haxby. The Five Miles from Anywhere pub provided a plentiful supply of pints and Mini Cheddars, the West Norfolk Rowing Club laid on tea, soft drinks and home-made cakes, and the Isle of Ely Rowing Club hosted the event, providing boats, support and a delightful sunny riverbank from which to launch on Day 2.

The rowers, ranging in age from early 60s to over 80, not only  took on a huge physical challenge, but also did a sterling job raising funds for our charitable work. Setting themselves a high bar with a £5,000 target, Lea Rowing Club rowers are expecting to smash this and are on course to raise over £5,500!
