Take Back Your Life

A free, inclusive course that supports people with chronic pain or long-term health conditions to find relief, connection and confidence

Building resilience, reducing pain and improving wellbeing

Take Back Your Life was a free wellbeing course that helped Tower Hamlets residents living with chronic pain or long-term health conditions feel more at ease, more connected, and more in control.

Adapted from the award-winning Breathworks programme, ‘Mindfulness for Health’, the course combined mindfulness, self-care and community support. Created to be accessible for people from all backgrounds, it offered a warm and inclusive space where people can learn to manage pain, build resilience and reconnect with life.

Now managed by Happy in Your Body (HiYB)

As of November 2023, Take Back Your Life (TBYL) has been managed solely by Anna (Tish) Robinson at the Happy in Your Body (HiYB) Community Interest Company.

The project continues to monitor data surrounding participants’ levels of pain, discomfort, and their ability to manage pain themselves. Past attendees of TBYL have reported significant improvements to their wellbeing including:

  • An increased ability to manage pain

  • Feeling more calm and relaxed

  • Lower levels of pain

  • Reduced dependency on medication

  • Being kinder to themselves regarding their pain

  • Feeling more connected to others in their community

  • Being more appreciative of beauty and nature

  • Feeling better at pacing day-to-day activities so they’re manageable

  • "I have injections in my back and all sorts of problems in my spine, so I have to motivate myself all the time. But the mindfulness… I breathe better. Before, I’m not taking the full breaths. You’re rushing, it’s a hundred miles an hour life we live in London ain’t it? Now, it’s just relaxed."

  • "It’s a very valuable service, and I would recommend other people to do it. It really does help. "

  • "Before the course I could only walk 5 to 10 mins… I would make sure my walk wasn’t too far from home in case the pain got unbearable. I wouldn’t go out on my own. I was scared my body would collapse. Now I can walk pain free on my own for up to 30 minutes."
