Past Projects

Looking back at Globe Community Projects that have been bringing people together in Tower Hamlets since 2003

20+ years of nurturing belonging and community

Since GCP’s inception in 2003, we’ve delivered projects in and around Tower Hamlets that respond to a wide range of community needs. From benefits advice to supporting women back into employment, we’ve helped people in our community onto a path towards more fulfilled lives.

But at the heart of all our projects is our commitment to building connections in our community. Continue reading to learn more about our previous work.

Take Back Your Life

Take Back Your Life was a free, inclusive course that supported Tower Hamlets residents living with chronic pain or long-term health conditions to find relief, connection and confidence.

Blending mindfulness techniques with practical tools, the course helped participants feel calmer, more in control and less alone in their experience. Designed for people of all backgrounds and language abilities, TBYL offered a space in which people could feel supported, build resilience, and connect with themselves and others.

  • "What supports me is having a feeling of not being alone, and feeling of togetherness."

    Adunni

  • "People here are so nice. There is no judgement. It’s been uplifting."

    Sue

  • “I am very pleased I learned more. Be positive, be kind, love yourself.”

    Farzana, 64

  • "I really like coming here, to socialise and to meet other people."

    Lynda

  • "We’ve laughed here. We’ve cried here. We’ve embraced each other. I was definitely glass half empty when I started this course, now I am glass half full."

Other past projects

Material Lives

A collaboration between Globe Community Project and Jambala bookshop, Material lives supported a group of migrant women to engage with each other and the wider community by using textiles to tell their life stories. The project culminated in a private viewing and exhibition of the work at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 2017.

Aikido and Wellbeing

Over the years, we have delivered a range of community exercise and relaxation classes to help people improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Among these classes included our Aikido course for young people aged 12-16, teaching teens how to improve physical fitness, flexibility, and relaxation through self-defence.

Shifting Point

Shifting Point was a drama project for young men aged 20–30 with experience of the criminal justice system. Through creative sessions that explored themes of home, identity and belonging, participants regained confidence, developed communication skills and found space to reflect on their past while imagining new possibilities for the future.

Our Changing Lives

A project focused on storytelling and drama for women and girls to process and share their unique experiences. Participants came from all corners of the globe including Bangladesh, Ghana, Italy and Ireland.

Claim the Max

From 2005 to 2016, Claim the Max was our bilingual Bengali and English benefits advice service. Across 11 years, we helped more than 1000 clients understand and access the UK’s benefits system. Developed in partnership with Tower Hamlets Citizens Advice Service and Globe Town Community Association, the project sadly came to an end due to government cuts.
